First Ascent of The Watchtower

Chances are even if you do live in (or near) the state of Washington you've never heard of Strobach. Strobach is located just south of Rimrock, WA on highway 12. It's a 2-3 hour snowshoe from the car to the climbs. Some would argue the climbs arent worth the hike. I would respectfully disagree with that but then again hiking to climb something is exactly my idea of a great weekend.

This past weekend Dave Burdick and I made the first ascent of "The Watchtower"

Ever since the publication of "Washington Ice: A Climbing Guide" in 2003 the word has been out about "The Watchtower".

Steep.

Long.

Unclimbed.

Many have made the 3 hour hike to it's base only to opt out. I personally did this on two seperate trips.

But not this weekend.

John - when I grow up, I want to be just like you. Seriously, thanks for laying track and inspiration for the rest of us. Emulation is key. Thanks for sharing and much respect.

John,

Congrats on the first ascent. This is exactly why I listen to what you. You do it. You take the confidence gained in the gym and use it to do something real.

The real thing is climbing. A true sport, where judgement and confidence in ones ability means success or failure. Success or failure often means life or death.

Very cool,

Pat M
